Wongalee wind energy project receives state development approval
Windlab is pleased to announce that the Wongalee wind energy project has received state development approval, a key milestone in our mission to deliver clean, reliable, and affordable energy while creating lasting regional benefits through the North Queensland Super Hub.
Located on Yirendali Country near Hughenden, Wongalee is designed not only to coexist with the region’s foundational agricultural industry, but to complement and enhance it — supporting a future where clean energy and agriculture thrive side by side. The project will generate up to 1.4 GW of clean energy — enough to power 500,000 homes annually and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The project will create around 500 jobs during construction, and Windlab is committed to building an enduring positive legacy by investing in sustainable regional development initiatives that matter to local communities.
Nathan Blundell, Windlab Chief Development Officer, said the approval marks a major step forward in unlocking the enormous renewable potential of North Queensland.
“Wongalee will play an essential role in delivering critical infrastructure, regional investment, and long-term employment opportunities to Hughenden and the broader Flinders Shire,” Mr Blundell said.
“The project is expected to benefit from planned transmission upgrades, including CopperString 2032, which would enable large-scale renewable generation to reach the grid and strengthen Queensland’s energy security.”
The approval follows around two years extensive technical design, detailed environmental assessments, and ongoing engagement with Traditional Owners, landholders, government agencies, and the local community.
With state development approval now secured, the project will move into detailed design and delivery planning. Windlab looks forward to progressing through the EPBC assessment process.
“Our approach to development is built on genuine, ongoing engagement with our stakeholders, particularly our host communities and landholders.
“Their insights have played a central role in shaping the design of the Wongalee wind energy project.
“We’re committed to ensuring the project continues to reflect local values, meets regulatory requirements, and delivers meaningful long-term benefits,” Mr Blundell said.
With a long-standing presence in the region through projects like Kennedy Energy Park and the recently fully permitted Prairie wind energy project, Windlab is proud to continue working alongside the Flinders Shire and contributing to Queensland’s clean energy future.
